Recognizing the events of the day is the most basic way for children to become aware of the passage of time as they become aware of how events re-occur at specific times during the day.
Children cannot 'tell the time' before they are ready. This concept evolves slowly – first by the numbers 1 to 12; later by distinguishing the minute and hour hands; consequently on how to count in fives, both backwards and forwards; the parts of circle –half and quarter and how an hour divides into twelve equal parts.
